Grammar is no longer the primary aim in foreign language teaching, but a means
of communicative situations. This pragmatics-based approach is reflected in
foreign language teaching and textbooks. Speech acts play an important role in
determining grammatical structures. These grammatical structures are treated with
regard to their functions in the communication process. Aim of this work is to
investigate the relationship between speech acts and grammar in local German
textbooks for secondary level. The textbooks “Schritt für Schritt Deutsch A1.1",
"Deutschkasten A1.2" and "Wie bitte? A2.1" are analyzed. The data is collected
through the analysis of the textbooks and then compared with Profile German,
which is developed as a reference framework for German as a foreign language.
Based on the results, the relationship between speech acts and grammar in the
local German textbooks is presented. In the textbooks "Schritt für Schritt
Deutsch" and "Deutschkasten" it is found that the grammatical topics treated in
certain communication situations are not suitable for this situation. Shortcomings
regarding the expression of the speech acts and their order within the modules are
noted. The data is obtained from the Profiles German catalog showed that the
communication situations correspond to the most suitable grammatical topics. In
the textbook "Wie bitte?" no information is found to speech acts. Grammar is in the
foreground of this textbook. It is found that the grammatical topics are sometimes
the topics of a higher level. Based upon the results, some suggestions have been
stated to contribute the development of local textbooks.
