The purpose of this study is to examine the usability of 3D Multi-User Virtual Environments (3D MUVEs) for cooperative team work. Satisfaction, cooperative learning, and social presence perception levels of students, who use a three-dimensional multi-user virtual environment for cooperative team work, were investigated and 3D MUVE’s affordances and limitations for cooperative learning were examined.
This research is a case study using a mixed methodology approach. There were 69 students in the study, who were enrolled to “Programming Languages 2” course in Computer Education and Instructional Technology Department at Education Faculty of Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey in 2011-2012 academic year. Students were allocated to 11 teams. The teams used Active Worlds voluntarily in their teamwork. A demographic questionnaire was administered to participants at the beginning of the course. Interviews were carried out in the laboratory during the implementation of the research and participants were asked to submit personal reports related to their project. After the implementation, Student Satisfaction Scale, Cooperative Learning Perception Scale and Social Presence Scale were administered to all participants who used Active Worlds and participants were asked to submit a reflection report.
