The purpose of this study is to identify the perceived competencies of English language instructors in teaching four skills and to reveal to what degree English instructors’ gender, department, level of education and experience in teaching predict these perceptions. The study group of this research comprises of English instructors working at preparatory schools in Ankara. The study was conducted with 251 voluntary English instructors. The research data were collected with the scale of perceived competencies of English instructors. In this research, descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation) and quantitative data analysis techniques (Mann Whitney U, Kruskall Wallis H) were used and findings were interpreted. The results were summarized as below; 1. It was found that English instructors’ perceived competencies are the highest in teaching speaking, the lowest in teaching listening. 2. In teaching four skills, it was found that a. women English instructors find themselves more competent than men English instructors. b. the English instructors who graduated from English language teaching department find themselves more competent than the ones who graduated from other departments. c. English instructors with Phd degree find themselves more competent than the ones with master’s degree; English instructors with master’s degree find themselves more competent than the ones with bachelor’s degree. d. English instructors with more teaching experience feel themselves more competent than the ones with less teaching experience.
The results of this research are expected to serve not only English instructors and the students but also the quality of education in preparatory schools.
