Özet
One of the main components of society today, technology has triggered some changes in social relations. A sphere with a huge amount of applications of technology, industry reveals the most striking changes. The pros and cons of technology for humanity has been a controversial issue. Whether it is a positive outcome of the development of humanity or a concept full of risks for humanity is a question in our minds. Finding answers to these questions leads us to some notions. Two of the concepts associated with technology are knowledge and information. Technology and knowledge bring about the basis for the flourishing surveillance and control. Time and space perception is a current issue as well. The pace of life is increasingly rapid and the accessibility of different locations shows an increase. Communication is one of the elements that are at the core of the society. What do all these mean in terms of industry and workers? Is a new kind of responsibility concept being triggered by technology? This study tries to find an answer to these questions.
The main aim of this study is to explore the reflections of the use of technology in terms of information, surveillance, control and time and space in the work place. Most of the studies about workers tend to adress them in numbers or with macro feautures of society. A sociological perspective on them can yield effective results. Some industries, with their vibrant atmosphere, do not maintain stable and fixed relations. Social relations are getting context-based, flexible and prone to constant change. Workers are encouraged to take responsibilities and decisions, no matter what their positions in the hierarchy are. But how much and in what ways are questions at stake. Responsibilities are not results of some distinct process and workers themselves are the actors to build the relationships. Having its roots in the economy, the antagonism of time, space, information and power are the basis of investigations in this study.
Based on a fieldwork in an airport, the data of the study comes from participant observation and semi-structured interviews with workers from an airline and a handling company operating in an airport in Turkey. The conclusions drawn from the data reveal that, technology can become the ground for incessant flux of responsibilities for workers and the struggle is about coping with the complex nature of responsibilities.
