In this study, it was aimed to examine the relationship among organizational
citizenship behaviors, leadership styles and their effects on academic performance
of academic staff according to the opinions of academic staff in universities. In this
context, variations of academic’s opinions were also investigated in terms of
gender, age, professional seniority, academic title, the kind of faculty and
universities.
The research is conducted with the contribution of 291 academicians during the
2015-2016 academic year from the Hacettepe University, METU and Gazi
Universities of the Ankara province.
Data acquisition tool used the “Organizational Citizenship Behavior Questionaire”
developed by Podsakoff and Smith, and the “Leadership Inventory, the Turkish
version of the “Multifactor Leadership Questionaire”, developed by Bass and
Avolio. The Academic Performance Index of the academicians is derived from
their respective Academic Incentive payments established according to the
Academic Incentive Regulation. Analitic methodologies of data collected during the
study include the t test, ANOVA and multiple regression analyses. The structural
validity of the data acquisition tools is checked with the confirmatory factor
analysis (CFA). The goodness of fit values obtained by CFA confirms the validity
of the factor structures. The consistency of the questionaries is verified using the
Cronbach’ coefficient alpha methodology. The Cronbach’s Alpha of Organizational
Citizenship Behavior Questionnaire is computed to.78 while the Leadership
Inventory Questionaire, to.94. Pearson Correlation Coefficient and multivariate
regression analysis techniques were used in studying the relationships between
variables. The significance tests of the study were conducted at p <.05 level. The
mediating effect of organizational citizenship in relation to leadership and
academic performance was examined by path analysis.
