Abstract

. This cross-sectional, correlational study examined the relationship between intensive care nurses’ knowledge of delirium and their self-efficacy in delirium care. The study was conducted between March 2025 and January 2026 among 232 nurses working in adult tertiary intensive care units at Ankara Etlik City Hospital. Data were collected using the Nurse Information Form, the Delirium Knowledge Test for Intensive Care Nurses (DBT-YBH), and the Delirium Care Self-Efficacy Scale for Intensive Care Nurses (DBÖYÖ-YBH). G*Power 3.1.9.7 was used to assess the adequacy of the sample size for multiple regression analyses, while R version 4.4.1 and IBM SPSS Statistics version 23 were used for statistical analyses. Descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U test, Spearman’s rank correlation analysis, and robust regression analysis were performed, with statistical significance set at p<0.05. The median age of the nurses was 26 years, and the median durations of professional and intensive care experience were both 3 years. Of the participants, 73.3% were female and 91.0% held a bachelor’s degree. Although 62.9% of the nurses had previously received information about delirium, an equal proportion reported being dissatisfied with their current level of delirium knowledge. The median total DBT-YBH score was 19.00 (Q1–Q3: 15–21), while the median total DBÖYÖ-YBH score was 50.00 (Q1–Q3: 41–56). Intensive care experience was positively and weakly correlated with the total DBÖYÖ-YBH score (rₛ=0.167; p=0.011). Nurses who had received information about delirium and those who were satisfied with their current level of delirium knowledge had significantly higher DBÖYÖ-YBH scores (p=0.009 and p=0.004, respectively). Similarly, nurses who held an intensive care nursing certificate, had received information about delirium, and were satisfied with their current level of knowledge had significantly higher DBT-YBH scores. A significant positive correlation was found between DBT-YBH and DBÖYÖ-YBH scores (rₛ=0.360; p<0.001). Two robust regression models were established to identify factors associated with delirium knowledge and self-efficacy in delirium care. The first model explained 19.5% of the variance in DBT-YBH scores, whereas the second explained 20.3% of the variance in DBÖYÖ-YBH scores. In the second model, the DBT-YBH score significantly and positively predicted the DBÖYÖ-YBH score (β=0.330; p<0.001). Overall, the findings suggest that greater knowledge of delirium is positively associated with higher self-efficacy in delirium care among intensive care nurses. Accordingly, regular, practice-oriented delirium education programs should be incorporated into continuing professional development, and the routine clinical use of standardized delirium assessment tools should be encouraged.
