In line with the innovative and sustainability goals of the New European Bauhaus
(NEB) movement, the study aims to examine the impact of experience-oriented
practices in the process of theoretical and practical knowledge acquisition in the
context of material learning in interior architecture education. In interior architecture
education curriculum, material courses are included in the building courses group.
Material learning is related to the building courses group. The focus of the study is
to investigate how the applied learning that existed in Bauhaus is maintained in the
interior architecture departments of NEB partner universities today and its impact
on students in terms of material learning. Action research method was adopted as
the method in the study. In the research, firstly, the educational approach of the NEB
movement is explained by scanning the Bauhaus' educational approach in the
literature. The content and application methods of materials courses were analyzed
through the interior architecture departments of NEB partner universities. In Turkey,
the materials courses of accredited interior architecture departments were analyzed
in terms of their content. A modular education model focused on materials learning
was created to cover the axis of building courses in the interior architecture
curriculum. In the education model, a course content plan was prepared by
specializing on the structure and materials course, which is the first step of the
material learning process. Two workshops were designed to fit into the course
content plan. Within the scope of the semester course content plan, the workshops
were implemented with second year student groups under the supervision of the
course instructor in the undergraduate program of the Department of Interior
Architecture and Environmental Design at TOBB University of Economics and
Technology. The data obtained from the applications were analyzed in detail on the
basis of theme and content. Material learning in interior architecture education is
related to the building courses group. The study emphasizes the importance of an
experience-oriented modular approach in which material knowledge is integrated
into building axis courses. Thus, in addition to the types and physical properties of
the material, an awareness can be gained in terms of material selection within the
scope of sustainable design targeted by NEB.
