In the 20th and 21st centuries, sports have become an important concept in the social sphere, moving away from the act of competitive performance. In the last century, as sports brought the masses together, it began to include many economic, cultural, political and social problems. The increasing relationship of the masses with sports in the process of socialization has expanded the sphere of influence of sports. In this sense, the relationship between sports and social processes and masses has led to the emergence of the concept of sports culture. This concept of sports culture is the subject of this thesis. The spread of sports among the masses and their popularization through the media has caused sports to be shown as an example of popular culture. In this context, sports culture and sports media have been accepted as a part of popular culture and have gained a significant place in everyday life. Examining sports culture and sports media in the context of popular culture reveals important data in terms of the problems created by social relations and cultural productions in this field. From this point of view, it is possible to analyze how the sports culture created by the sports media is, in which contexts it is handled, and its changes and transformations through popular culture.
In this thesis, Socrates Magazine, which is a productive area in terms of sports culture and sports media, is analyzed. Based on the assumption that Socrates Magazine, which is accepted as an example of alternative media within the sports media in Turkey, produces a different sports culture; its relationship with sports culture has been analyzed and the components of the sports culture it creates have been revealed. The study is based on descriptive analysis method, which adopts qualitative research methodology. As a sample, a holistic approach was taken to the printed content published by Socrates Magazine between 2015 and 2023 and the relationship between the selected texts and the dominant sports culture in Turkey was analyzed. The study concluded that Socrates Magazine is positioned in an alternative place within the dominant sports culture and that the magazine can produce an alternative sports culture.
