The research of 'Artistic Glass Applications with Glass Lathes and Potter’s wheel' has
been chosen because of the fact that glass lathe method particularly in glass culture, is a
new subject, glass artists and academic community. With this research, it has been
aimed to show how people who have obtained the ceramic discipline and education can
shape glass materials by using ceramics shaping methods, especially the potter’s wheel,
and shape artistic glass plate forms. The study has been deal with two parts; in the first
part; the definition, characteristics, and history of the glass, the subject of how the
potter's wheel has reached the present form of the glass lathe, what the glass lathe
method is, and how it works have been examined. In order to obtain artistic glass form
of glass lathe and borosilicate glass used as industrial method, glass shaping and
decoration processes have been tried to be explained as photographs and explanations.
In the second part, ceramics open moulds have been produced by the potter's wheel
method, and transparent, coloured and generally 3mm thick round, flat glass plates on
the moulds have been heat- treated and shaped in a fusion furnace.
The decoration applications made with clay, enamel and glass paints between the two
glasses, the techniques of sinking and glass dough (pate de verre) and the broad plate
forms and patterns of traditional Canakkale ceramics have been interpreted.
The artistic expression possibilities of the lathe known and used universally on the level
of the traditional and industrial area are examined versatile in the context of ceramic
lathe and glass lathe, and original applications have been made within the scope of the
research.
