Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a
progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes immobility. Bed sores
are an important problem in immobile patients. However, in ALS, it is known
that bed sores are less common than other neurological diseases. A number
of studies have been conducted to determine the cause of this, and in our
knowledge the effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and keratinocyte
growth factor (KGF) have not been studied in ALS patients. This study
included 10 ALS patients without bed sores and 16 patients with other
neurological diseases. Skin biopsies were taken from the skin on the gluteus
maximus muscle (proximal region) and 10 cm proximal to the lateral
malleolus (distal region). Biopsies were stained with EGF and KGF
antibodies by immunohistochemical methods. The samples were evaluated
semi-quantitatively. It was observed that EGF expression was higher in the
proximal region in ALS patients than in control patients. There was no
difference between groups in terms of KGF expression. These results
suggest that EGF may be an effective factor in the low incidence of bed injury
in ALS patients, similar to other growth factors previously. New studies with a
greater number of patients including patients with bed sores are needed to
verify our results.
