Abstract
In this study, it is aimed to analyze whether expressed emotion and psychological and
behavioral control from mother predicts depression, anxiety, agression symptoms and the
level of general psychological symptomatology in healthy university population or not.
The sample consisted of 378 people from Hacettepe University undergraduate students.
Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Buss-Perry Agression Inventory,
Brief Expressed Emotion Scale for Adolescents, Psychological Control Scale-Youth Self
Report (mother form), What Parents Know: “Monitoring Scale (mother form) and
demographic information scale were applied to the sample.
In the regression, they were found that expressed emotion and psychological control from
mothers significantly predict depression, anxiety, agression symptoms and the level of
general psychological symptomatology at positive direction. Also, behavioral controls
from mothers significantly predicts agression symptoms at negative direction. In
hierartical regression analysis which all predictor variables are included, it wasfound that
depressive symptoms are significantly predicted by all three variables. Anxiety symptoms
were significantly predicted by psychological and behavioral control from mother.
Agressive symptoms were significantly predicted by behavioral control from mother and
expressed emotion. And finally, the level of general psychological symptomatology was
significantly predicted by expressed emotion. At the end of the study, results were
discussed in the light of the related literature.
