Özet
In this study, it was aimed to examine the relationship between teaching profession job characteristics, work life balance in teachers and teachers’ intention to leave the profession according to the opinions of teachers. In this context, variations of teachers’ opinions were also investigated in terms of gender, marital status, educational status, professional seniority, the number of schools worked in the profession, the number of teachers in the school, the working district and age.
This research was conducted with the participation of 413 teachers in official secondary education institutions in nine districts of Ankara in the academic year of 2015-2016. In order to collect data in the quantitative phase of the study, " Job Characteristics of Teaching Profession Scale (JCTPS)" and "Intention to Leave Profession Scale" developed by the researcher and "Work Life Balance Scale" developed by Apaydın (2011) were applied. In the analysis of the data obtained in the research, t test, ANOVA, LSD test of post hoc tests, Pearson Correlation coefficient and multivariate regression analysis were used. The construct validity of data collection tools was tested by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The fit-good values obtained as a result of CFA showed that the factor structures of the scales were verified. For the reliability of the scales, Cronbach's alpha coefficients were calculated. The Cronbach alpha value of the JCTPS was .89 and the “Work Life Balance Scale” was .79.
There was a low and meaningful relationship between the dimensions of “Job Characteristics of Teaching Profession" and "Work Life Balance". The dimensions of “Job Characteristics of Teaching Profession" were not meaningful predictors of "Work Life Balance".
There was a low level and meaningful relationship between the dimensions of “Job Characteristics of Teaching Profession" and "Intention to Leave the Profession". Only the "Feedback to Teacher’s Performance" dimension of JCTP was a meaningful predictor of "Intention to Leave the Profession".
There was a low and meaningful relationship between the dimensions of "Work Life Balance" and "Intention to Leave the Profession". In this context, the "Over-commitment to Work” and “Making Time for Personal Activities” dimensions were meaningful predictors of "Intention to Leave the Profession".
According to the study findings; it was seen that there were meaningful differences in the opinions of the teachers in terms of gender, seniority, number of schools they worked and age.
It is thought that this study, which examined “job characteristics”, “work life balance” and “intention to leave the profession” of teachers together for the first time, will make a significant contribution to the literature, will also be helpful for the practitioners to understand teachers’ views on teaching profession and their professional expectations.
