Character designs can be used in animation studies, game designs, graphic novels, brand/mascot etc. in the context of visual communication design. It is a graphic design indicator that gains more and more importance in applications. Emotions, thoughts, cultural values, etc., which are reflected in the images of the characters, which are visual indicators. It is important to be well-planned and carried out in terms of elements, in terms of revealing a qualified character. In line with these approaches; It is important that historical images are used effectively with the aim of preserving, promoting, protecting and transferring the life styles of civilizations to future generations. Because, the use of character design applications made in the field in question in terms of conformity to the content, originality, creativity and aesthetics can increase the effect in terms of both form and target audience. Therefore, it is possible to carry historical images to a universal dimension and ensure their recognition through contemporary and original character designs.
In this thesis, it is aimed to emphasize the importance of character designs created from historical depictions by researching, to identify their problems, to develop suggestions for the solution of the identified problems, to present a theoretical study in the light of the suggestions developed and to carry out applications. In this context, based on the historical images that came to the fore in Anatolian civilizations, applications based on souvenir design were carried out to be presented to museum stores. Museum stores are one of the most interesting places for visitors during museum visits. Therefore, museum stores convey the historical heritage and cultural values of civilizations; It has an important place in protecting, remembering and promoting these values.
Today, although various characters have been designed based on historical depictions, their numbers are very few. One of the aims of this study is to contribute to the competitiveness of Turkish museums with the world museums in the context of souvenirs.
The first part of the research, which consists of five parts, includes the introduction. In the second part, historical images are mentioned, and information about prominent historical images and concepts in the world and in Turkey is given. The third chapter deals with character design. In the fourth chapter, there is an examination of character designs developed based on historical depictions. In the fifth and last chapter, the application study is presented by examining it.
