Industrial buildings, with their architectural language, spatial fiction and environmental
features, carry the traces of their periods not only in terms of architecture but also in
socio-cultural terms, and for these reasons, they are assets worth protecting. In this study,
adaptive reuse has been proposed as a method of preserving industrial heritage structures
that have completed their functional life, and their re-activity in the life cycle by creating
a resource for new functions is processed. Industrial heritage structures are represented
by silo structures and the concept of adaptive reuse is evaluated through silos. In the
industrial development period, silos are symbolic structures that represent an era, as they
have a function in which agriculture and industrial cultures are synthesized. In the study,
it is aimed to evaluate the adaptation of the silo structures, which are recommended to
be preserved by reuse, with different functions, through space arrangements.
The hypothesis of the study is the idea that the incompatibility between the old function
and the new function will have a better representation power in the re-use construct, as
an opposition to the prediction that the new function to be given in the reuse of the
buildings is close to the original function. Within the scope of this view, the reuse of silo
structures has been discussed over the accommodation function. The effect of this
incompatibility on the adaptation of accommodation function, which is shaped according
to the human being at the center and all needs of the user, and silo structures, whose
original function is a machine and where human use is very limited, is discussed. Bringing
the silo structures, which are not at human scale, to the appropriate scale with the
accommodation function has been evaluated through space arrangements. The
evaluation was made through the detailed analysis of Silo Erlenmatt from Switzerland and
Eskişehir TMO Silo from Turkey, which are examples of reused silos with accommodation
function. In the evaluation, it was concluded that the existing layout of the silos created
references for the accommodation function, and the incompatibility between the
functions with an intervention approach that preserves the original character of the
building offers various advantages in reuse.
