Abstract

An examination of nature’s structure reveals that it constantly regenerates itself through its own internal dynamics, persisting by evolving into more resilient forms. Inspired by this phenomenon of renewal, it is possible to transform surfaces and spaces by employing the art of calligraphy as a methodology, mirroring nature’s cyclical process. For instance, much like the self-healing capacity of a wound on the human body, a crack or peeling on a wall can be transformed into an aesthetic and artistic state—embracing the beauty of imperfection—through calligraphic intervention. In this way, a surface perceived as flawed is renewed, while spaces are unified through artistic expression. Just as the human body, as part of nature, possesses the capacity for self-renewal, calligraphy can also regenerate, transform, and manifest itself across diverse surfaces, reflecting the fluctuating visual and auditory senses of humanity through evolving contemporary technologies. This research examines experimental approaches in expressive calligraphy, departing from the premise that calligraphy acts as a vessel for a culture’s DNA. Consequently, it proposes the execution of Ikigai-themed calligraphic practices within an experimental framework across various surfaces and spaces, aiming to make aesthetic contributions that assist individuals in discovering their purpose in life and enriching their existence. The objective of this research is to examine experimental approaches in expressive calligraphy through the lens of ‘Ikigai’ philosophy, aiming to reveal existential purpose (life energy) and to manifest this internal discovery through calligraphic forms. By adopting a process-oriented approach to art, the artistic experience itself is prioritized. Accordingly, the study aims to document these actions concurrently and to transform the entire artistic process involved in the practical dimension of the thesis into a video art piece.
