Abstract
The aim of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of how women experience the grieving process
following abortion, the factors that shape this experience, and the ways in which they cope with it. Previous
research has demonstrated that abortion is often subject to judgment due to individual, cultural, and societal
dynamics, and that this context of judgment tends to render post-abortion grief invisible. Accordingly, this
study examines the experiences of women who have undergone abortion through the lens of the
disenfranchised grief model. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted
with six participants (n = 6). Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was employed as the research
design. Data analysis yielded a total of five superordinate themes and eighteen subordinate themes. The
superordinate themes were identified as: (i) Perceptions of Threat Across Different Contexts, (ii) Under the
Influence of Judgment, (iii) Ways of Regulating the Relationship with the Loss, (iv) Experience of Loss,
and (v) Grief as a Transformative Experience. The findings were discussed in relation to the existing
literature.
