Abstract
Schizophrenia is a disorder characterized by the presence of at least one of these symptoms: delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech, often accompanied by disorganized behavior/catatonia and reduced emotional expression. Numerous studies indicate that individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia report low levels of life satisfaction. The present study explores life satisfaction, self-efficacy, health locus of control and self-stigma as their relationship with life satisfaction. Specifically, this study aims to investigate whether self-stigma mediates the relationship between self-efficacy, health locus of control and life satisfaction among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. 120 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia were recruited from various associations or community mental health centers in Ankara and Samsun. The General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale – Form C, and the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale (ISMI) were used. Data were analyzed through correlation analyses and mediation models using IBM SPSS 23.0 and Hayes’ PROCESS macro. Analysis revealed no mediating effect of self-stigma in the relationship between general self-efficacy and health locus of control and life satisfaction. Subsequently, in the multiple mediation analysis including ISMI subscales, the perceived discrimination and stigma resistance subscales were found to mediate the relationship between general self-efficacy and the chance health locus of control subscale and life satisfaction. The findings demonstrate determinant aspects of self-stigma process on life satisfaction. The significance of interventions targeting both public stigma and self-stigma is discussed as part of the clinical implications of the study.
