In this thesis, the engagement and ethic problematics in Andre Malraux’s “The Conquerors” book were addressed in a thematic and comprehensive way.
The French literature had major transitions during the first half of the 20th century with the influence of avant-garde movements. The human and its values were questioned in intellectual and philosophic aspects as well as in morality standards. So the human in Andre Malraux’s novels represents the intellectual engagement who questions the society and its values metaphysically. This engagement always tries to create new ethic values for the human and one of the main problematics for Malraux. Ethics is the main concern in all books of Malraux. All figures in his novels are intellectuals because the presence phase can be questioned only with the help of consciousness.
The “The Conquerors” novel of André Malraux propounds new ideas in an intellectual engagement way in order to disentangle from intellectual crisis. Malraux judges the revolution as an intellectual, a philosopher, a critic; not as a revolutioner. But the essential difference in this situation is the intellectual positioning against the revolution. “The Conquerors” brings characters from a different life, values and political views come together in an intellectual atmosphere but also exposes the inevitable association of ethic concern and intellectual thinking or in other words intellectual engagement.
