The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationships between perceived parental attitudes, personality beliefs, early maladaptive schemas and obsessive-compulsive symptom levels. This thesis study includes two stages as quantitative and qualitative research using mixed method in line with the above-mentioned purposes. In the quantitative study, the mediating effects of personality beliefs and early maladaptive schemas on the relationship between perceived parental attitudes and obsessive-compulsive symptoms were examined. A total of 408 participants, 319 female, 87 male and 2 other gender, took place in the quantitative study. Short EMBU-Child Form, The Personality Beliefs Questionnaire–Short Turkish Form, Young Schema Questionnaire–Short Form and Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory–Revised Form were used as data collection tools. It was observed that as the rejection and overprotection perceived by individuals from their parents increased, the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms also increased. The findings obtained from the mediation analysis showed the mediating effect of avoidant and obsessive-compulsive beliefs on the relationship between perceived rejection and overprotection and obsessive-compulsive symptom severity. It was concluded that the relationship between perceived rejection and OCD symptom level was mediated by the schema areas of impaired autonomy, other-directedness, and unrelenting standards; and the relationship between perceived overprotection and OCD symptom level was mediated by impaired autonomy, impaired limits, other-directedness, and unrelenting standards. In the second stage of this thesis, the qualitative research, the aim was to deeply understand the essence of the parent-child relationships of six participants, four women and two men, diagnosed with OCD between the ages of 20-30. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted, and themes were revealed through interpretative phenomenological analysis. The focus of the characteristics of relationships with parents consists of the themes What Kind of Mother/Father and What Kind of Family Structure. The theme of What Kind of Mother/Father includes the subthemes Perfectionist/Oppressive/Authoritarian, Overprotective/Controlling/Interfering, Cold/Uninterested and Warm/Supportive; the theme of What Kind of Family Structure includes the subthemes Conservative/Religious and Prioritizes Education/Status. The focus of the effects of relationships consists of the themes I shouldn't make mistakes, I have a lot of things I keep inside, Something bad will happen to me, I am worthless, Nobody can be trusted, I am responsible, I am inadequate and I must be in control. The focus of the desired/ideal relationship includes the themes of Not Perfectionist/Oppressive/Authoritarian, Not Overcontrol/Interfering and Balanced, Caring and Close Relationship. The common finding from the quantitative and qualitative research is the negative parenting that individuals with high OCD symptoms are exposed to and the dysfunctional beliefs that emerge as a
result of this. It is thought that this research, which has some limitations, will make important contributions to the relevant literature and clinical practice regarding the etiology and treatment of obsessive-compulsive symptomatology.
