Reading habits are an important factor directly affecting the personal development and
educational success of children. Research shows that the academic performance of children
who regularly read books is higher than their peers who do not read or read less. Family,
friends, teachers, environmental characteristics, income and education level are of great
importance in the acquisition of this habit.
Probation is a penal execution method applied in the process of reintegration of individuals who
have committed crimes into society. This method allows the convicted to spend part of their
sentence in the community under certain rules and supervision. The main purpose of probation
is to reduce the risk of reoffending and to facilitate the person's adaptation to society.
In this study, the reading habits of children who are on probation in Ankara were examined on
the basis of occupation and continuing education, educational level of parents, income level of
these children, and income level of their families. The population of the study consists of 100
children who are followed up in Ankara Directorate of Probation in Keçiören district. The survey
technique was used to collect the data and the research was conducted with the description
method. According to the results obtained in the research, there is a significant relationship
between the reading habits of the children in the scope of the research and their age and their
continuation of education and not breaking away from school. Reading habits decline with age
and leaving formal education. Good and intermediate readers are children who are still in formal
education. Among those who leave school and start working, most do not read at all, and those
who do read are poor readers. This naturally leads to a decline in reading habits as children get
older. The research hypothesis "Children under probation in Ankara have poor reading habits
and their continued involvement with education positively affects their reading habits" was
confirmed.
