Functional graded materials (FGMs) are nonhomogeneous type of material whose mechanical properties vary continously from one point to another. FGM structures created with two materials mixed at a certain volumetric rate have been the solution source for situations where composite materials can not respond in technology. In engineering applications, friction is one of the most the important problems that occurs due to the unaviodable contact of materials. The abrasion is mostly due to hig stresses applied to friction surfaces. Calculation of sub-surface stresses is very important in terms of the mechanical design of the components since most of damage is due to fatigue in areas where sub-surface stresses have reached higher levels. In this study, laterally graded materials was modeled to include a friction coefficient that varies spatially on the surface then subsurface contact stress distribution caused by friction contact solved by running analyzes in finite element program and considering different loading geometric conditions. The main originality of this study is that the results of subsurface stress distribution in laterally graded materials are obtained by considering the friction coefficient which varies spatially in the contact area. Similar studies and analytical results were used to confirm the results to be obtained in the literature. The laterally graded materials exposed to friction contact were modeled using ANSYS Mechanical APDL (ANSYS Parametric Design Language) which is a general purpose finite element analysis program. Parametric computer codes were developed for laterally graded material model and spatial changing friction coefficient contact on the surface and parametric analysis carried out by running these codes in ANSYS Mechanical APDL. In the results to be obtained in laterally graded materials under different contact conditions (for example, different material heterogeneity, friction coefficient, spatial variation of coefficent of friction) were examined.
