Gender roles, as well as the stereotypes and prejudices they bring, limit women in both private and public spheres. The challenges women face due to gender roles are also evident in the field of music. This study will examine the impact of gender roles on the lives of women musicians. It will discuss and explore whether the boundaries imposed on the works and lives of women musicians by gender roles can be expanded through feminist thought and female solidarity, and how a safer and more liberating space can be created for women in the music industry through the examples of Kreşendo, Sisters Music Chain, Sista Sound, Kadınlarla Jam, Hit Like A Girl Turkey, and the “Duy Sesimi (Hear My Voice)” project which operate with the aim of achieving gender equality in the music sector. The study will investigate whether the experiences, knowledge, and concepts brought by the feminist movement in Turkey are significant for these organizations, and if so, how much this is reflected in their activities and discourses. To achieve this, the study will first examine the history of the women's movement in Turkey as well as the music policies implemented to understand the environments in which women musicians perform and the debates surrounding music. Then, the problems highlighted by organizations and their proposed solutions, as well as the spaces they open for women musicians and the extent of these spaces, will be discussed. In conclusion, it has been observed that Kreşendo is able to produce more effective and inclusive solutions to the problems faced by women musicians in the music industry compared to other organizations, due to its nourishment from feminist concepts and its creation of projects that include collaborations and women musicians outside of Istanbul.
