Abstract

Memory is a complex system that enables individuals to store, retrieve and forget their past experiences. It plays a pivotal role in the formation of both individual and collective identities. Artistic expression serves as an effective vehicle for the materialisation of memory processes and the representation of the past. Artists re-enact memory images through the medium of the senses, thereby transferring the emotional resonance of the past to the present. The processes of memory and forgetting shape the functionality of the memory system by influencing the selection and retention of specific events. Artistic expression serves to fix images in memory, thereby ensuring the durability of recollections and the preservation of the past. The study focuses on how personal memories are shaped by past experiences and how they are expressed through artistic means. This study examines the impact of autobiographical memory and art on the processes of recording and expressing memories. In contemporary art, the concepts of memory and time are explored through the evaluation of research methods used by artists to investigate personal and collective memory. Furthermore, the relationship between memory and space is elucidated in artistic works, demonstrating how space affects memory processes. The manner in which artists represent their memories through visual imagery and the ways in which these representations evoke and resonate with viewers across different eras and genres are analysed in this study. The study employs these methods as a reference point to examine how memory is constructed, maintained and conveyed through the medium of art. The objective is to elucidate the role of cultural and social contexts in the interpretation of memory images.
