ABSTRACT
In this thesis, considering that watch design is a fundamental necessity, the dial designs of wristwatches and the interface designs of smartwatches have been examined. In the first part, we focus on why the concept of time should be measured and how this measurement is visually communicated. The historical development of time measurement tools and their evolution into wristwatches are discussed alongside the history of science. The relationship between watch designs, human history, and their visual aspects is also examined.
In the second part, interface design, which has become increasingly important in recent years, is discussed alongside the development of computer technologies. Since smartwatches are classified under wearable technologies in the literature, these technologies and human-computer interaction are also explored. It is also discussed how smartwatches operate not only through graphical user interfaces but also through other forms of interaction.
In the third section, the technological evolution of smartwatches is examined, from mechanical watches to today’s smartwatches. It is emphasized how technological innovations interact with marketing, consumer habits, and social psychology, along with scientific advancements. In addition, the operating systems of modern smartwatches, their interface designs, and design approaches are explained with examples.
As an application study, five mobile applications were designed, prioritizing aesthetic styles in interface designs. In addition to application designs, graphic products created to promote these mobile products were also included.
Keywords: Graphic design, smartwatch, interface design, watch faces, mobil application.
