Summarization is a comprehension skill that enhances understanding and long-term retention of information. It involves students focusing on key information from what they have listened to, watched, or read and then expressing it in written or oral form. Effective summarization requires cognitive processes such as classifying, sequencing, decision-making, inferring, and identifying the main idea. To apply summarization skills accurately, students must be taught through a planned and phased educational process.
This study aims to identify and compare the perceptions and practices of students and Turkish teachers regarding summarization skills. It was conducted using the embedded multiple case study method, a qualitative research approach. The study group consisted of sixteen 7th-grade students and their Turkish teachers from a middle school in the Adapazarı district of Sakarya. Perceptions of students and teachers about summarization skills and their classroom applications were determined through semi-structured interviews. Additionally, a summarization practice was conducted with the students to determine the relationship between their perceptions and summarization practices. The findings from this practice were related to the interview findings.
The study concluded that there is a relationship between the perceptions and practices of Turkish teachers and students regarding summarization skills. It identified issues that hinder the development of summarization skills and noted inconsistencies between students' and teachers' perceptions and practices. The study provided insights into the current state of the learning and teaching process of summarization skills.
