Museums are significant centers that reflect the life and culture of society and carry a strong educational mission. By depicting the past and narrating stories, museums provide a meaningful and tangible learning environment. This study seeks to answer the question of how a child's visit to a museum can be most effectively conducted as an educational tool.
An effective museum visit for children comprises three stages: 1) preparations before the visit, 2) activities during the museum visit, and 3) feedback and reflection after the visit. A productive museum visit can be discussed when these three stages are planned. In the study, an interactive guidebook designed with effective design elements is considered an effective visual design project that addresses these three stages.
In this research, qualitative research methods were used to collect, analyze, and interpret data. During the data collection phase, research was based on museum-related books for children aged 7-12. In this context, children's books prepared by museums were examined, focusing on storybooks and activity books that describe the museum. As an example, a guidebook was prepared for the Erimtan Archaeology and Arts Museum, and a museum visit was organized with third-grade students to evaluate this book. Before the visit, a pre-visit survey was conducted with the students, and a post-visit evaluation survey was administered. The findings revealed that the interactive guidebook was effective in terms of design, and its visual presentation and narrative language contributed significantly to the museum visit. The visuals allowed for a closer examination of the details and artistic features of the artifacts, while the narrative language conveyed information in a simple and understandable manner, enabling visitors to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the exhibits. Thus, the interactive guidebook transformed the museum visit into a richer and more interactive experience. Such research can also contribute to determining strategies for designing and implementing more effective and child-friendly guide materials in the field of museum education.
