Translation von Kulturspezifika am Beispiel des Romans "Das Uhrenstellinstitut" von Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar -Probleme und Perspektiven-

Abstract

This work deals with the translation difficulties that arise when translating cultural elements in Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's “The Time Regulation Institute”. The various cultural elements selected and possible strategies for overcoming translation difficulties are indicated. The theoretical part consists of Peter Newmark's "categorization of culture specific items" and Lawrence Venuti's "domestication and foreignization" theories. The Time Regulation Institute has been translated into 25 languages. The novel covers three periods, namely the first and second constitutional periods of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic and in particular the people who lived during this time and fluctuated between the old and the new, i.e. between traditional and modern culture. Thus, the novel contains many cultural elements from the beginning of the 20th century such as Ottoman authorities, Sharia authorities, religious rules, currencies and various courts. As the piece contains many cultural elements, the translator is faced with the task of dealing with the cultural elements appropriately and transferring them into the target language or target culture. This work, discusses the transfer of cultural elements on the basis of 80 examples and offers possible solutions.
