The aim of this study is to determine the current trends in the experimental research methods of dentin as a result of the distribution of the studies on the effects of chemicals applied to the dentin surface for chemomechanical shaping and disinfection in root canal treatment on the basic structural properties of dentin by years and the classification of the methods used in these studies by bibliometric analysis method. In this bibliometric analysis, 2 reliable periodicals in the field of endodontics; Journal of Endodontics (JOE) and International Endodontic Journal (IEJ) published between 2001-2007 and 2016-2022 were used. In our study, two different search strategies were applied for analysis. For the first analysis, WoS, one of the electronic databases, was consulted. VOSviewer 1.6.6.0 software was used to create a bibliometric network map from the data obtained as a result of the analysis with the determined keywords. From IEJ and JOE journals, 640 publications were reached between 2001-2007. As a result of the search in these journals for the years 2016-2022, 634 articles were obtained. In the manual search method, 2141 publications were found in IEJ and JOE journals between 2001-2007. Among these 2141 publications, 123 publications in which dentin examination techniques were used were obtained. Between 2016 and 2022, 2719 publications were identified in IEJ and JOE journals. Of these 2719 publications, 121 were found to be related to dentin examination techniques. Another analysis topic was the evaluation of the available categories in the journals according to the years and months of publication. The irrigants used in chemomechanical preparation and the techniques of dentin examination after their use were also categorized. Tables were created with these data and the findings were summarized with numbers and percentages. When the network maps obtained with the VOSviewer 1.6.6.0 software were analyzed, it was seen that the most frequently used keyword was sodium hypochlorite in both studied periods. When the author citation analysis performed with the same software was analyzed, it was determined that the number of author citations decreased between 2016-2022. When the results of manual searches were analyzed, it was observed that both the types of reviews and the number of reviews increased dramatically between 2016 and 2022. In the analysis between 2016-2022, it was determined that the finding of increasing number of reviews from the manual search results correlated with the result of decreasing number of citations in the electronic database. As a result of the study conducted with the manual method, it was determined that NaOCl was always the most commonly used irrigant except for 2020 in 2016-2022. It was determined that the other irrigant category was proportionally high in both journals in the 2001-2007 periods and decreased in the 2016-2022 periods. Surface examination tests and biological tests, which examine the effects on dentin structure after irrigation, were the most commonly used techniques. While we expected the research methods used in the studies evaluating the effects of chemicals used in the root canal on dentin structure to be studies on dentin ultrastructural analysis, which has aroused curiosity especially in recent years, it was observed that the studies on the organic structure of dentin were the least in these 2 journals.
