Abstract
It is very hard to diagnose the cause of death in drowning cases. Body could have decomposed and deformed or marks of the cause of death could disappear depending on time that body immersed into water. In that cases, the most important thing is to decide that victim was drowned or not. Diatom test is used for this purpose exactly and gives reliable results by extracting and analysing diatoms. So after that process we can easily decide the cause of death and obtain informations about duration of body’s immersion in water or presence expect the location that victim was discovered or determine where the victim was drowned. For analysing diatoms, they have to be extracted from places (tissue, clothes) that they can be found. In this study, we compared the most used extraction methods like rinsing water (RW), rinsing ethanol (RE), H2O2 and HF acid method (that is used for analysing pollens from soil samples in forensic palynology). Diatoms are isolated from aquatic and terrestrial samples, taken microphotographs on light microscope (LM), identified on genus level and numbered.
