JANGI, Masoumeh. Quality of Life and Psycho-Social Needs of Mothers and
Fathers with Leukemia Child, PhD Thesis, Ankara, 2023.
Given the nature of the treatment process of childhood cancers, the general self efficacy of parents in the care of the child during the treatment process is
expected to play an important role in children's response to treatment. It also
affects the emotional state of the parents. As in all chronic diseases, the care of
the child with leukemia is quite difficult, the treatment and treatment period is
long, the need for care is multi-dimensional, and parents must participate in this
process and overcome this crisis together. The self-efficacy of the parents is also
an effective factor in the quality of care provided to the child. In general, it is
revealed that parents of children need psychosocial support in diseases such as
leukemia which have severe treatment process. The aim of this study was to
determine the quality of life and psychosocial needs of parents with leukemia. In
this study, qualitative research method was used as the research method.
Qualitative research is used to reveal differences between variables in the
analysis group.
The population of the study consists of the parents of the children with leukemia
who have been treated in LÖSEV Foundation in Ankara. There are close to
40,000 children with leukemia registered in this foundation. A total of 384 mothers
or fathers are the sample size with 95% confidence level and 5% sampling error.
As a data collection tool; ıtıcı Introductory Information Form amacıyla to obtain
general information about the characteristics of leukemia children and their
parents prepared by the researcher, “World Health Organization Quality of Life
Scale Short Form (WHOQOL-Bref) for measuring the quality of life of mothers
and children with leukemia; “Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale
(MSPSS)” was used to determine the psychosocial needs of fathers.
The Kolmogorow-Smirnov test will be used to determine whether the data are
normally distributed. In case data is normally distributed, independent groups t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and pearson correlation analysis will
viii
be used in the analysis of the data. It will also benefit from correlation analysis for
the relationship between quality of life and psychosocial needs of parents with
leukemia. The analysis of the data obtained from the research will be carried out
in the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 22.0 package program. As
a result, parents of children with leukemia seem to have moderate problems in
terms of physical, psychological, social, environmental and basic needs during
the treatment process. In addition, more than half of the parents (53.9%) seem to
have moderate and severe depression. In this direction, suggestions are
presented in the perspective of empowerment approach to increase the quality
of life of parents with children with leukemia and to reduce depression levels.
