In this study, Nevit Kodallı's orchestral suites "Telli Turna" and "Güzelleme" were analyzed in terms of conducting techniques. Nevit Kodallı, who can be considered one of the second generation composers of contemporary Turkish music, has many works for orchestra, chamber music, solo and piano that are noteworthy in terms of the history of polyphonic Turkish music. Kodallı's understanding of music is based on local motifs within the scope of modality, but can also be considered atonal to the point of being anti-tonal. In this study, the orchestral suites "Telli Turna" and "Güzelleme", in which he makes extensive use of local motifs, are discussed in terms of conducting techniques. In terms of subject and scope, firstly, the development and evolution process of polyphonic music in Turkey was defined and secondly, Kodallı's musical understanding was mentioned. Then, the form and harmonic analysis of the work was made for compositional analysis, and the results of the analysis were presented. In the last part of the study, orchestral suites were analyzed in terms of conducting techniques.
As a result of the study, it was determined that the whole of both orchestral suites consists of maqam and modal elements, modal and tonal understanding is included harmonically, chord organizations are used independently, both orchestral suites contain basic conducting techniques, as well as sections and sections in disrupted scale are important in terms of conducting techniques.
Considering the examination and conclusion processes of the study, it is evaluated that the examination of both orchestral suites, which are included in the concert programs of professional orchestras as well as school orchestras, in terms of conducting techniques will constitute a resource for conductors who will study these works.
