Sociodemographic and Professional Variables Predicting Them. Hacettepe

Ankara, 2023. This study was conducted to determine the levels of compassion fatigue,
burnout and compassion satisfaction of nurses working in emergency, oncology and
Covid-19 units and the sociodemographic and professional variables that predict them.
The sample of the study consisted of a total of 321 nurses, 107 emergency, 107 oncology,
107 Covid-19 service nurses, from hospitals that have a bed capacity of 200 or more within
the borders of Ankara city, which have three of the emergency, oncology and Covid-19
units and gave permission for the study to be carried out. Data were collected between
August 2021 and December 2022 using the Sociodemographic and Professional
Information Form and the Professional Quality of Life Scale - IV. Frequency analysis,
significance tests, correlation and regression analysis were used for data analysis.
According to the study results; the nurses working in oncology units had the statistically
highest compassion fatigue levels. It was determined that perceived income status and
perception of supportive social network in private life were the significant predictors of
compassion fatigue in the nurses working in the emergency units. It was determined that
choosing the profession voluntarily and intent to leave the profession were the significant
predictors of compassion satisfaction in the nurses working in the oncology units. In the
nurses working in Covid-19 units, significant predictors of compassion fatigue were
intention to leave the profession and resting duration in a shift; significant predictors of
burnout were intention to leave the profession and perception of supportive social network
in the workplace and significant predictors of compassion satisfaction were duration of
patient care in a shift and perception of supportive social network in the workplace. For
nurses working in these three fields, it is recommended to carry out support efforts that
take into account the risk factors determined in terms of compassion fatigue, burnout and
compassion satisfaction.
