In the 19th century, it is known that the changes in the Ottoman Empire had an
impact on the youth, the age group most open to innovation. These changes were
vividly reflected in the novels written. Although the moral dimension attributed to
youth in the initial phase of the Turkish novel is similar to the understanding in
classical literature, it has been determined that it has transformed with the
Tanzimat. In this study, this transformation in the perception of youth was tried
to be revealed with reference to the Turkish novels written in the 19th century.
Thirty-eight novels were analyzed by selecting from the novelists of the period
such as Ahmet Mithat Efendi, Şemsettin Sami, Namık Kemal, Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil,
Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, Samipaşazade Sezai, Ömer Ali Bey, Ahmet Rasim,
Fatma Aliye Hanım, Mizancı Murat, Ahmet İhsan Tokgöz, Mehmet Celal, Mehmet
Vecihi, Behice Ziya Kollar, Nabizade Nazım, Fatma Fahrünnisa. In this initial
phase, which prepared the basis for the following periods, it was seen that a
modern perception of youth was shaped in parallel with the history of youth
through literary texts. The functions attributed to the youth as the savior of the
society were determined through literary texts, and the perception of youth, which
was separated from the traditional understanding and transformed, was revealed.
