Abstract

This study was conducted as a descriptive study in order to evaluate the awareness and attitudes of nurses who care for them regarding privacy. The study was carried out with 75 patients who had obstetrics and gynaecology surgery and 112 nurses caring for them between December 2020 and June 2021 in Ankara Bilkent City Hospital Gynaecology and Obstetrics Tower. The data of the study were collected by using the "Introductory Information Form" and "Privacy Scale" for nurses, "Introductory Information Form" and "Patient Privacy Awareness and Attitude Scale" for patients. Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test, t-test and One-Way ANOVA test were used in the statistical analysis of the research data. The mean total score of the nurses' privacy scale was 4.47±0.53, and the total score of the patients was 3.55±0.63. In the study, nurses' awareness/attention to privacy was found to be high/very high, and almost all of the nurses stated that they did not neglect patient privacy. More than half of the patients stated that they experienced a moderate or high level of privacy violation. The difference between the scores of the privacy scale was found to be statistically significant according to the educational status of the nurses, reading the Patient Rights Regulation (HHY), participating in activities such as courses and training, and making sense of privacy (p<0.05). The difference between the scale scores of the patients according to their age, education level, previous hospitalization experience, staying in a single room, and reading HHY was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The findings of the study show that there is a difference in the awareness and attitudes of patients and nurses towards privacy. As a result, it is recommended to conduct studies with larger samples in different surgical clinics where the awareness and attitudes of nurses and patients regarding privacy are compared.
