ANALYSIS OF TUNES IN THE VOLUME 14, BOOK 6 OF THE FOLK SONGS REPERTOIRE BY GOMIDAS VARTABED IN TERMS OF MAKAM CHARACTERISTICS WITH THE METHOD OF MELODIC NUCLEI

ABSTRACT
The folk songs compilation studies are closely related to the rising Nationalism and Westernization movement in the Ottoman and Europe during the nineteenth century. Gomidas Vartabed who is a composer, singer, compiler, teacher, choir conductor and a priest was the first music researcher who compiled folk songs in Anatolia, at the end of the nineteenth century. The music studies of Gomidas are important in terms of reflecting folklore movement and musical appreciation. It is observed that Gomidas who is accepted as a founder of Armenian national music, put great effort in conceiving the common of roots of the cultural heritages of different folks living in Anatolia besides Armenian music. It is possible to regard Gomidas as a pioneer in terms of ethnomusicology discipline with the earliest compilation study in Anatolian music history. In this study, selected tunes from Gomidas Vartabed’s compilation book, which involves Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian compilations were analyzed in their makam characteristics.
In the first part of the study, it is informed about the historical process of Anatolian Armenians, their meeting with Christianity, Armenian liturgic music and the effects of Westernization in Armenian religous music and Church music, musical traditions and its relationship with the tradition of Minstrelsy.
In the second part, the life of Gomidas, the view to the way of his compilator and compositor, his music education, compilation studies, Armenian traditional music and his relationship of nationalism, his place in folklore movements are emphasized.
In the last part, the works in compilation studies numbered as Volume 14, Book 6, were studied with makam analysis based on “melodic nuclei”. The tunes to be analyzed were rewritten with a preference compatible with the makam family determined in accordance with the melodic movements and the melodic nuclei are revealed.
