ŞAHİN, Duran Eren. Synesthesia in the poems of Küçük İskender. Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2021.
Synesthesia, in one way, is described as a sense complexity, and in another way it is accepted as a medical anomaly. The word comes from the combination of two Greek words “Sin” and “Asisthesis”. These words that mean “together” and “emotion/sense/feeling” respectively, show us the etymological construct of the concept of synesthesia. The concept of synesthesia stands out as a field that has been discussed since the Ancient Greek, and a field that has been the focus of research lately, due to the increased number of brain studies and the advancement of the medical technology. This concept has been discussed and studied even in the first ages, although in a primitive way, has been pushed aside for a long time due to the rational world view and the deterministic perception of the Age of Enlightenment However, in the 19th century, the romanticism movement that has been led by the romantics helped the concept to come into fashion once again. Besides German romantics, great and bohemian poets of the age such as French Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud are among the best known synesthetes.
Küçük İskender on the other hand is an important constituent of the Turkish poem after 1980. İskender, whose first poems have been publilshed in Adam Sanat magazine in 1985, have signalled the novel approach he will bring to Turkish poem by his book “Gözlerim Sığmıyor Yüzüme” that has been published in 1988. The poem, who is known as a pioneer of the style known as “Underground Literature” in Turkish poem, begins building the wall of the style brick by brick with his striking use of the language, novel imaginative world and by inviting the street to the poem. In our thesis, we will find the metaphors of Küçük İskender which are created with a synesthete attitude, and try to determine the place of the concept of synesthesia in the poet’s universe of poems. The research question of the thesis is to establish the connection of synesthesia, which is on one hand perceived as a medical anomaly and on the other hand considered as a product of metaphysical-aesthetic effort, with the metaphors and imagery created by İskender in his poems. Due to scope of the thesis, not all poem books of Küçük İskender will be included in this study. Only certain poems of İskender that are related with the concept of synesthesia, and the poems that include metaphors that are created in parallel to this concept will be examined. At the end of the examination, it is intended to explain how these metaphors coincide with the the concept of synesthesia and the reasons behind it.
