The spindle whorls, which are considered as the subject of Proficiency in Artwork Report, can be defined as both an archaeological find and an ethnographic object. Spindle whorls come from the depths of history and have preserved their existence until recently. Spindle whorls as an important tool in weaving culture of Anatolia has unfortunately started to disappear. Spindle whorls which have started to be erased from our memories today have been reinterpreted as an object of Contemporary Ceramic Art. This study report consisted of four main sections, excluding the introduction. In introduction section, information was given about the reasons for choosing spindle whorls as the subject of study, the limitations of the subject, and the features of this tool used for spinning yarn.
In the first section of the study report, the definitions and fields of study of Ethnography, which was a sub-branch of Anthropology, as well as Archeology were briefly mentioned. Evaluations of spindle whorls that were of interest to these disciplines were made. In addition, the issue of spindle whorls, as one of our material cultural assets to be an object of art was discussed. This section of the study chronological spindle whorls selected from different regions of Anatolia were evaluated giving examples according to their status both as an archaeological find and an ethnographic tool. Spindle whorls were widely discussed as an image in art from past to present. In this section, the studies carried out on spindle whorls used as an image in different disciplines of the art in Turkey and the world were addressed. Previous studies were interpreted.
In the second, personal applications were administered benefiting from some studies and experiences related to spindle whorls. The whole process of this application was completed with the studies and interpretations. In the conclusion section, findings were emphasized and recommendations were offered.
