Arslan F.N., Factors Determining Postoperative Duration of Hospitalisation in Geriatric Patients Undergone Minor Surgery. Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. Thesis in Anesthesiology and Reanimation. Ankara 2019
Aging population increases throughout the world and that makes anesthesiologist dealing with the problems about geriatric patients. Aim of this study is to investigate the factors associated with the desicion on hospital stay and postoperative duration of hospitalisation after minor surgeries in geriatric patients. After gaining ethics approval, we enrolled patients aged above 65 years old between ASA 1-3 undergone minor surgeries and we applied Barthel Score test, Mini mental score test and frailty score test to those selected patients. We collected clinical data and evaluate the relationships between those parameters and lenght of stay after surgical procedures. All assesments and tests applied to patients by the same anesthesiologist and patients are informed that results of the tesst do not affect the medical practise. We use Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Levene ve One-Way ANOVA test for statistics.
Results of this study shows that frail (Frailty score 6-7) and pre-frail ( Frailty score 4-5) patiens have prolonged length of stay after surgical procedures. It's correlated with the currentyl available data. Beside that finding ASA score is found as an independent factor associated with lenght of stay. Albumin levels in patients who needs intensive care unit after surgeries are found significantly lower compared with who do not need intensive care unit.
It is concluded that according to the effects of frailty on the lenght of stay, frailty evaluation should be routinely applied to the geriatric patients and the interventions to increase the physical conditions of frail patients should be done.
