Abstract

Belief in hell which is a place of punishment for the spirits of wicked people go after death is common in almost all religions. Hell can have different names and structures in different religions but the common point is that it is a place of torment and suffering. Despite having these negative features, the visual depictions and artistic interpretations of hell continue to be produced and attract attention to this day since the first emergence of belief in hell. The depictions, interpretations, and metaphors of the concept of hell in art make the significance of hell worth examining. The reason why hell has an important place for itself in art and popular culture is in line with the reasons of religions that produce it. When examining why the concept of hell exists in religions and what it means to people, an evaluation can be made on the reasons and significance of the depictions and interpretations of hell in art. The fact that the concept of Hell can be used as a metaphor in expressing feelings such as pain, fear, and hate makes it valuable beyond terms of religion. While the similarity of the concept of hell with life on the earth makes it seem more realistic in the human mind compared to other religious concepts, expressing life on the earth through the metaphor of hell offers a realistic approach to life itself.
