1947-1998 Türkiye-Suriye İlişkileri: Güvenlik Sorunu Bağlamında Problemler ve Krizler

Abstract

In this study titled “1947-1998 Turkey-Syria Relations: Problems and Crisises in the Context of Security Issue”, problems and crises experienced in the context of security issue between Turkey and Syria between the years 1947-1998 are examined and policies and strategies both countries have implemented against each other are discussed. Since the main subject of the study is the “security problem” between the two countries, other issues except security were not included in the study. According to the findings obtained as a result of the study; we can say that the cause of security problems experienced between the years 1947-1998 between Turkey and Syria have a long-established base. Syria, which maintained a hostile attitude towards Turkey since it had left Ottoman Empire, continued to increase its hostile attitude after the country gained independence in 1946. In addition to this, because of Syria’s internal political problems faced in itself, the Cold War that started in 1947 and finally the issue of Hatay and transboundary waters, major security threats were directed against Turkey by Syria between the years 1947-1998. As a result, there were major problems and crises between the two countries for many years in the context of security issue. However, in the face of Turkey’s determined attitude, Syria signed the Adana Agreement with Turkey in 1998 and accepted it wouldn’t pose any security threat against Turkey henceforth.
