In recent years, with the development of technology, dyes have found applications in optical and photonic systems besides traditional textile applications. In particular, many dyes including the donor-π-acceptor, D-π-A systems, which are formed by connecting electron donor and acceptor groups with the π-conjugation bridge of NLO (Non-linear optics), fluorescent probe, anion-cation sensors and so on potential areas of use. In particular, the presence of azo (-N=N-) and vinil bridge (-HC=CH-) in their structures has enabled the use of many dyes in optical datas storage, laser printing, electrograph, static copying, hologram, solar batteries, optical polarization and optical limiting materials. Azo and methine chromophores are very important in organic dyes chemistry. Although, there are many organic dyes which have azo and dimethine chromophores, the dyes including both chromophore in the same molecule are a few.
Therefore, in this thesis, it is aimed to synthesize new dyes having D-π-A-π-D system where both chromophores are together. The structures of the compounds obtained were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. The photophysical properties of the compounds were investigated in various solvents with different polarities. The thermal stability of the compounds was determined by Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) measurements. The anion sensitivity/selectivity properties of the indole containing compound were investigated by spectrophotometric titration method.
