Abstract

With the development of technology, the notion of artificial intelligence has witnessed an increasing interest. Studies in this field, where human business forms are defined by algorithms, have accelerated more than ever in recent years and artificial intelligence applications have been found in almost all industries.

Artificial intelligence applications in design, on the other hand, are developed with examples of furniture design in practice, but there are very few studies on artificial intelligence in furniture design. The subject of this study in which artificial intelligence and generative design are examined with examples and evaluations in furniture design process is, the effect of artificial intelligence supported design tools on furniture design processes and the future of design. In this context, the officials of the Design and R&D Centers operating in the furniture sector were interviewed, the advantages and disadvantages of the notion of artificial intelligence were discussed and the role of human contribution in artificial intelligence applications was evaluated.

The study consists of five chapters. In the first chapter, the notion of artificial intelligence and generative design are examined extensively and the definition, methods and examples are given. The comparison of artificial intelligence with natural intelligence, its future and the effect of generative systems on design processes are examined in all aspects. In the second and third chapters, the subject of furniture design and artificial intelligence were investigated with examples and Design and R&D Centers were mentioned. In the fourth chapter, field study, methods and findings are given.

With the findings obtained in the thesis, the future of artificial intelligence, its effect on design processes, potentials and promises are mentioned in a general evaluation.
