Abstract
This Master Thesis focuses on the traumatic effects of the past, future and the present in the context of “identity” problem, which is a comprehensive concept as a vocabulary. The experience meant here is the experience that witnessed and reflect to the artist or inother frame to the art, in terms of its consequences in the tragic events caused by identity politics. From this point of view, the effects of art and politics togetherness on artist's life and productions are discussed in contradiction of the art / politics.
The aim of this study is to clarify how the concept of identity has changed from a concept in art and history perspective to a protest attitude that symbolizes the problem situation with the role of artist life in this situation. The method of study was realized in two sections as literary and practice and these sections were carried out parallel to each other. The approach of artists, critics and thinkers to similar subjects are included and supported by, in the last section, a series of pictures, videos and photographs.
Although the idea of equality and freedom began with Renaissance in art, it was resized with the French revolution. The individual and ideological approaches began to manifest themselves in the works towards the end of the 18th century. In this period, while the real violence events and phenomena were the subject of art, human emotions took place in the art for the first time under the influence of 19th century romanticism. The definition of identity that develops and evolves from the romantic thoughts of the 18th and 19th centuries becomes the subject that constitutes the theoretical framework of 20th century art. Especially in the 1980s, the effect of identity politics applied to art and artist in the process of transition from modernism to post-modernism from colonialism to globalization is an undeniable fact. In this respect, the relationship between art and politics is based on an approach, the reflections of identity politics in art are examined, and examples of artists working on the subject are included in this document.
“Identity politics” is one of the basic concepts of political movement and theory in Turkey. With this feature assertion, the approach of official ideologies to the concept of identity in 1980 and after was mentioned and the perspectives of the artists in terms of their signatures on their works were explained. In the Personal Application Study section, the theoretical and practical studies will be examined on the identity over the “living / experience”; the concept of “other” and the violence to determine the relationships between those headlines.
