This thesis traces a particular discussion by asking ”How do works of art represent social classes?” instead of the rhetoric question of ”What does a work of art repre-sent?”
Artistic representations have a political/class character. From this point forth, the artwork is not only a simple representation or a reflection but also it’s artist’s intel-lectual and emotional world, the class to which he belongs, society and history.
What determines thought is materials relations which dominate social life. These dominant material relations breed a dominant way of thinking in society. The art-ist’s way of thinking as an individual is under the influence of these dominant thoughts. What the artist expresses by his artwork is the original narrative of both his class character and the organic connection that he establishes with society.
In the context of this thesis, the artist’s changing material/class conditions and the alteration of his artworks will be examined simultaneously. Since this review will include an autobiographical narrative, some of the artworks will be referred to as ”autobiographical artworks”. As a supportive element of the study, the known ex-amples and artists from the history of art will be tried to be related in the frame of the subject. By the inferences obtained from these discussions, on one hand through the artwork of classes will be made as realism discussions by searching for the way of the pure representations; on the other hand, the portrait of the artist as an individual of action will be emphasized.
