Abstract

Interior architecture as a discipline aims to design how the space is perceived, taking aesthetic and spiritual concerns into consideration as well as functionality. One of the most efficient means interior architecture uses to this end is furniture. Interior architecture and furniture, one of the basic design elements of interior architecture, are in constant interaction. Thus, studying the furniture industry is of great importance to make contributions to interior architecture as a field.

Therefore, this study aims to investigate the problems in the furniture industry, constituting a substantial part of the interior architecture profession’s application fields, from the perspective of the leading companies of the industry. Under the study, data were obtained through face-to-face interviews with officials of the companies having an important place in the sector. The data collected in these interviews were analyzed to reveal the general status of the furniture industry, identify possible problems to occur as a result of this area’s influence on the interior architecture profession, and proposing solutions to these problems. In addition, through the results of the study, it was aimed to make contributions to other studies to be conducted in this field.

In this regard, the content of this study covers the importance of the concepts of interior architecture and furniture and their influence on each other, current status and problems of the furniture industry, interviews made to identify these problems, information obtained via these interviews, effects of the study results on the interior architecture discipline and the proposed solutions.
