12 Eylül 1980 Sonrası Türkiye’den İngiltere’ye Politik Göç (1980-1989)

People of Turkish origin, who have migrated to Europe due to economic motivations, has reached huge numbers before 1980s. After the coup d’état of 12 September 1980, approximately 30 thousand people have taken refuge as political refugees mostly in discrete European countries. However, the increase in the number of refugees from Turkey to United Kingdom has become evident especially after the coup of 12 September. In this sense, people of Turkish origin who have migrated to UK are political refugees, rather than having solely economic motivations. This wave of migration to UK after 1980s has proceeded through the migration of people who were active in various leftist political organizations in Turkey, even though it has included other segments of society as well. This study takes the refugees, who has migrated to UK due to political reasons, at the center of inquiry in order to ascertain their ideas during times of immigration and their evaluation of past within the framework of their current life. In this regard, for the quantitative data 46 household interview surveys (187 people in total) and 378 political refugee questionnaires; and for the qualitative data 81 semi-structured interview, 22 in-depth interviews and 4 focus interviews have been conducted in the various cities of UK: London being in the first place, Cambridge, Cardiff, Bournemouth and Coventry, where people of Turkish origins mostly reside. Based on the findings of the field study, the common motivations and incentives for political migration and exile are determined; and the changes and transformation in the political, economic, cultural and daily life expectations of the refugees, together with their political stances in times of migration, are examined.
