Abstract
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a psychiatric condition that is defined as intentional destruction of body tissue without suicidal intent and it is becoming a common health problem among adolescents recently. There isn't much evidence about the relationship between NSSI and suicidal behaviour. The aim of this study is to compare developmental and psychopathological characteristics of adolescents with NSSI+suicidal attempt and only NSSI. This thesis presents a cross-sectional study. The study involves three groups: First group consists of 40 adolescents with NSSI, second group consists of 45 adolescents with suicidal attempt and the third consists of 42 adolescents who appeal our clinic who had never injured themselves. These adolescents were evaluated by the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, Ways of Coping Inventory ,Body Attitudes Scale ,Adolescent Relationship Scales Questionnaire, State Trait Anxiety Inventory and Brief Symptom Inventory. The adolescents in all groups were interviewed with KSADS .Self-injuring adolescents were also evaluated in detail for their NSSI behaviours using Ottawa Self Injury Inventory- Clinical. Adolescents with NSSI and adolescents with suicide attempt had more illness history at their family, more difficulty in emotion regulation, more non-adaptive coping styles, more psychiatric symptoms, more depression and Attention Deficit Hiperactivity Disorder(ADHD), low self esteem compared to control group. Adolescents with NSSI+Suicidal Attempt had more psychiatri csymptoms ,low self esteem, more depression and Post Traumatic Stres Disorder, more difficulty in emotion regulation and more frequent self-injury
