BAROTCU, Songül. Diyarbakır Sheikh Safa (İparlı) Mosque Collection, Master’s Thesis, Ankara
Sheikh Safa (İparlı) Mosque Collection is in Diyarbakır Sur Region, in the west of Ulu Mosque, in Melik Ahmet District, in Kara Cami Street. Diyarbakır is located in the Taurus Mountains and Upper Tigris Basin, South-eastern Anatolian Region. The city, which has maintained its significance throughout history, is one of exceptional cities where numerous civilizations established their domination. Diyarbakır, having been remained under the domination of Romans and Byzantines, was governed by governors during Islamic period. Besides making the capital city for Akkoyunlus, during Ottoman period, it became an important military and commercial centre by maintaining its significance. There are a number of historical works remaining particularly from the reign of Uzun Hasan (Tall Hasan) in Diyarbakır, which was then under the domination of Akkoyunlus between the years 1401 and 1507. One of the most important works left from the period of Tall Hasan is Safa Mosque. Safa Mosque Collection, which is situated in Diyarbakır Sur Region, on Melik Ahmet Street, in the west of Ulu Mosque, consists of buildings such as mosque, madrasa, and tomb. The definite construction dates of the mosque, madrasa and tomb are not known since these buildings do not have any inscriptions. The buildings, experienced repairs and maintenances for several times, give people a notion due to their originalities.
In this thesis study, after being compared, the constructions left from the periods of Akkoyunlus and Ottomans in Diyarbakır were tried to be evaluated by taking Safa Mosque, Muslihiddin Lari Madrasa and Sheikh Abdülcelil Tomb into consideration in terms of plan, architecture and decoration. The structure (Safa Mosque), which has arrived our date untouched, can be anticipated that it reflects the features of Akkoyunlu style; and can set an example for Ottoman period architecture in Diyarbakır with respect to decoration.
