The verb, which is the most important element of the sentence, contains important syntactic and semantic categories such as time, aspect, tense and person. One of the categories among these, the aspect, has two different dimensions. The first dimension, which is known as the lexical aspect, is directly related to the internal temporal meaning of the verb. Second dimension, which is known as the grammatical aspect, makes one time period more obvious related with the lexical aspect. In the linguistics literature, both dimensions of the aspect were reviewed and discussed from many different perspectives. The first important work on the classification of verbs in Turkish according to grammatical and lexical aspects was done by Lars Johanson.
Then Johanson's model was adapted to Turkish and Turkic languages by his students and various researchers and important results were obtained. The aim of this study is to analyze two dimensional geometrical lexical aspect model developed by W. Croft and try to adapt this model to Turkish verb system. Croft adds new classes to the defined verb classes in linguistics literature and makes them more understandable by using a time vs. quality based two dimensional geometrical representation. The adaptation of such a different aspectual model to Turkish and further discussions about that will give the researchers an opportunity to reevaluate Turkish verbal semantics from a different perspective and will carry Turkish aspect studies to a more advanced level.
