In this research it is aimed to determine levels of knowledge and practice of parents of the students who were educated in 2017-2018 education year in Private Tevfik Fikret Schools in Ankara, regarding preventing ARI (acute respiratory infections) which is an important problem in children and to evaluate the effectiveness of a smartphone app developed/ used by gamification technique. This study was carried out in two stages as descriptive and interventional study. Data were collected between September 2017 and January 2018. 146 of 637 parents volunteered to participate in intervention study. A 99-item questionnaire developed by the researcher was used in the pre-test and a 56-item questionnaire developed by the researcher in the post-test. In this research, there were 10 questions which measure knowledge of the parents regarding children’s ARI. Participants received 1 point for each correct answer and 0 point for incorrect answers. A total knowledge score was calculated for each participant over 22 points. There were 23 questions which measure general hygiene points, in the research which way a knowledge score was calculated for each participant over 92 points . Changes in answers for some questions before and after the intervention, median values of the scores, the differences between the scores and variables affecting them were evaluated. In the intervention group; higher median value of the knowledge score of post-test in comparison to pre-test was found to be statistically significant. Also when we compared the knowledge scores of intervention and control groups in the post-test (p=0,54). In the intervention group and control group; higher median value of the general hygiene score of post-test in comparison to pre-test was found not to be statistically significant (p= 0,13).
